The UK boss of McDonald’s has reported in the winter of 2023 to MPs that there have been a concerning number of sexual harassment cases and bullying of workers across its branches. McDonalds who employ 180,000 workers across the UK, many of whom are under the age of 25, is coming under pressure to deal with the widespread sexual harassment claims. Other claims against the company also include race discrimination, bullying and assault. It was discovered that these claims were coming from employees as young as 17.
MPs sitting on the Commons Business and Trade Committee head from chief executive Alistar Macrow that “the cases are absolutely horrendous.” In his statement he stated that McDonalds had received 407 complaints of which only 157 had been fully investigated and only 75 had led to disciplinary action, including 18 cases of dismissal.
Macrow has since set up and investigation unit in late July after the allegations were revealed. He stated that there was no particular area of the UK that these cases were coming from but also mentioned that there had been an allegation in every shop across London.
Commentary
Nobody should have to experience instances of sexual assault, bullying, or racism especially not in the workplace. Employers have a responsibility to ensure that their employees are safeguarded against such instances. When these instances happen employers should investigate fully and take disciplinary action if necessary. When employers fail to do so, they should seek to compensate the aggrieved employee.
